Causes of Shoulder Pain

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Multiple joints make up the shoulder, allowing for a wide range of motion. However, the shoulder is susceptible to many injuries and conditions. If you’re experiencing shoulder pain, there are numerous potential causes. To get to the root of your shoulder pain, it’s important to receive a diagnosis from a medical expert, such as a member of the team at Suncoast Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine.

The most common causes of shoulder pain include:

Shoulder Tendon Inflammation

Shoulder tendinitis is a frequent culprit in cases of shoulder pain. This condition is characterized by inflammation in the rotator cuff or the bicep tendons of the shoulder. Shoulder tendinitis is commonly experienced by athletes due to overusing the shoulder tendons. However, people who put a strain on the shoulder tendons at work or in any other scenarios are also at risk of developing shoulder tendinitis.

Shoulder Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation in a joint. Shoulder arthritis causes pain, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the shoulder joint. There are several types of arthritis, with osteoarthritis being the most common. This condition occurs as a result of wear and tear in the affected joint, often due to age.

Shoulder Instability

Shoulder instability typically arises when the shoulder labrum, ligaments, or lining are injured. When one of these types of soft tissue in the shoulder is injured — whether torn, stretched, or detached — it can cause shoulder instability. The ball of the shoulder joint may then slip out of the socket, causing pain and weakness in the shoulder.

Torn Rotator Cuff

A torn rotator cuff is another common shoulder injury. The rotator cuff is made up of muscles and tendons that aid in lifting and rotating the arm. If a rotator cuff tear occurs, patients commonly experience shoulder pain, as well as shoulder and arm weakness.
